"Objects"

Avelina De Ment

"In the performance piece “Objects” I explore the double standards placed on women, as well as the objectifications, shaming and the criticisms we face daily. It feels as though women in our society are always “too much” of something. Too big, too small, too loud, too quiet...the list goes on. To avoid the judgments we often try to shrink ourselves, to stay silent and compliant. We contort ourselves to fit into the minuscule boxes created by society in which women ought to fit into. However, even in that tiny box every action, word, movement and body part of a woman will be judged and criticized. So why do we try to fit into the boxes in the first place? We have to stand up, take up space, amplify our voice and ultimately free ourselves from these labels and boxes." -Avelina de Ment The performance is a metaphor for the daily inner struggle and fight to stand up against all the intimidation and degradation from our patriarchal society.
